The UI/UX case study on the Jiddu Krishnamurti application. The aim of the application is to connect all the devotees in one place. People can listen to podcasts, watch videos and read and order books written by JK in just small steps.

Why I started This Project.

I started working on this project from my own experience. In this increasingly competitive world maintaining a good work-life balance is already challenging we are all searching for peace and clarity in life. There is a lot of application available out there for improvement in life but there is nothing for Krishnamurti wisdom. So I decided to work on the application where all the devotees of JK come and spend time without distraction and in a minimal way.

Problem statement.

Unaccessible information and Unattractive interface. People find difficulties in getting Krishnamurti material on their website so they need an application where they can get complete material with a modern minimal interface and better flow so people can easily understand the entire path in the application. The old and default website is quite boring with a bad experience.

Challenges

As I started this project with my own experience so there is no budget plan for the application and research+testing. The challenge is to build an ecosystem for Krishnamurti philosophy where users feel complete ecstasy while using the J.krishnamurti application.

Scope of Work & Timeline

Discover.

User Research.

User research focused on understanding user behavior, user needs, and primary motivation through observation techniques, communication, and different feedback methodologies.

I approach 2 different research methods i.e qualitative and quantitative research. In the qualitative method, I contact 4 people in the JK forum and talked to them about the difficulty they face while searching for Krishnamurti wisdom in different places. In quantitative research, I have taken a survey of 8 people

Questionaire

Design Strategy.

  1. Executive Intent- This project is for users who want to include Krishnamurti in their day-to-day life for betterment. Users can also browse the wisdom of Krishnamurti and read books on life. In addition, they can enjoy podcasts, videos, and blogs written from Jk books. They can contribute to the Krishnamurti organization through donations.
  2. Target Audience- Teachers, Students, Working Professionals, Scholars, etc. Gender — Male, female and all
    Profession — Working and Non-working
    Age group — 20 to 70
  3. General Task- The major task is to provide Krishnamurti content accessibly and aesthetically. Other than that users can browse multiple format content with minimal touch and also enjoy the update through the the organization.
  4. Major Competitor- Alanwatt.org/ Ramdass.org/ krishnadas.com/ Osho.com/ Sathyasai.org/ sadguru.org and so on.

Define.

User Persona.

I created two different user personas for the target user group and all the information gathered by the research. I was able to create two fictional characters who represent the target user groups for the application.

User flow.

User flow reflects the user's progress from the launch of the application to the discovery of all the functionalities in the app and doing some actions.

User Flow

Card Sorting.

Card sorting was done to categorize all the features under different sections which will help in further organizing the information architecture.

Develop.

Lo-Fi wireframe.

Based on feedback and personal sight. I began to design the first wireframe using Figma. I made sure to prioritize the features that would best address the user’s needs throughout the application.

System Guide.

Logo: Language of graphics-oriented is used to recognize a public identification of a brand or company. I chose Corinthia font as the logo because the essence of JK philosophy has been followed since the classic time so I decided to put a retro feel in it.

Colors: Color plays a significant role in UI design and it also steers your mood and emotions.

Why I chose their colors? When I got the idea to work on this application first I researched the past work of Krishnamurti. I saw his website, youtube channel, and social media handle and I sometimes read Krishnamurti so I took his feelings and started picking colors from all of these. I chose black intentionally because of its historic feel. I chose the background white for peace and harmony and all the interactive colors naturally according to human psychology.

Typography: Typography is the art and technique of arranging type to make written language legible, readable, and appealing when displayed.

So Why I chose Inter and Open sans? I want minimal aesthetic text that matches the vibe of Krishnamurti so first I chose Poppin but then I go with inter because I got the minimal fragrance from it. Open sans is known for minimalism I tried and decided to choose this one.

Grid and Shadow. I followed Google material design for GRID and SHADOW for better usability and a painless experience.

Grid and Shadow

Iconography: For Iconography, I decided to go with the same Google material design. I chose all the icons according to the need for content and downloaded a bundle from material design Icons and decently used them in the application. When I was working on the lo-fi design I thought the application will be minimal so I tried to match the vibe with icons.

The Final User Interface

With the help of research and analysis, I created the final UI design prototype.

Delivery

User Feedback.

I used the prototype to conduct a test with 4 users in our target audience. Participants were able to use the app with ease and happy with the design. There were few positive and negative feedbacks. This helped me uncover opportunities to improve the overall user experience by building an effective, efficient, and enjoyable experience.

Positive Feedback-

  1. The content is well managed and easily accessible.
  2. I really like the daily story that reminds me of the application and Krishnamurti.
  3. Finally, I have the Krishnamurti app with modernism, authenticism, and simplism.

Negative Feedback-

  1. You should focus on more colors.
  2. You can add one section of resume play where you left off last time.

The Solution.

I focus on the total need of the targeted user and build an application where they all can get complete material and update under one roof.

  1. I created a solution for books where people can directly buy books from the JK store.
  2. I worked on a solution where they can listen to podcasts in the application without any distractive ads.
  3. I build a solution for text, videos, and daily update posts where users can connect and get wisdom from JK.

My Learning.

  1. This is my first UX case study and It was quite a challenging experience, I would like to say thanks to all people who agreed to give me their valuable time for research. I learned a lot about the diversity of opinion which eventually taught me the importance of user research.
  2. When I started this project I was very excited and scared of completion but one friend of mine help me to complete this project and learn more than a lot.
  3. Various new techniques, fundamentals, and principles I learned while doing this project such as the psychology of the users, user personas, flows, Design strategy, how to make good extraction of the research, etc. I learned all of them during the process, and it added a lot of value to my skills.
  4. I learned the importance of asking appropriate questions to users, to get the correct data.
  5. I learned different tools such as FIGJAM, Figma, notion, Google forms, and Adobe XD(for fun experiments).
  6. Apart from that I also learned a lot of new features and tricks with Figma, XD, and notion so this can definitely improve my workflow and make the process faster in the future.

Thanks for reading the case study till the end. If you liked it then do give a clap 👏👏 to this article. Please share your reviews and feedback in the comment section.
